Pharmaceutical Services - Douglas County Hospital Pharmacy
1. Scope of Services:
Pharmacy Services are designed to meet the needs of all patients at Douglas County Hospital, both inpatients and outpatients. The Pharmacy Department works with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals to provide care to patients in all phases of development from newborn to geriatric states.
Pharmaceutical Services Include:
- Maintenance of a drug profile on all hospital patients
- Review of the patient's drug regimen for appropriate drug therapy and for any potential interactions, interferences, or incompatibilities prior to dispensing drugs to the patient
- Dispensing of drugs in unit-dose form for patient use
- Preparation and dispensing of IV solutions with additives (both intermittent and continuous infusion)
- Preparation and dispensing of chemotherapeutic agents
- Dispensing and control of controlled substance drugs (Sch 2-5)
- Dispensing of investigational drugs used within the hospital
- Maintenance of Emergency drugs and antidotes as approved by the medical staff (hospital formulary)
- Provide drug information to physicians and other hospital personnel, including maintenance of adequate references
- Orientation/Education/Training of departmental personnel, hospital personnel, and students
- Patient drug counseling
- Performance Improvement monitoring of Pharmacy Services
- Pharmacokinetic Drug Monitoring Program
2. Skill Levels of Personnel:
Pharmacy Department personnel must possess the skill level in order to provide safe, competent, and accurate care as defined under the above scope of care for the Pharmacy Department. Pharmacists must be registered and licensed in accordance with the regulations of the State Board of Pharmacy, with training and experience that emphasizes an acute care hospital environment. Technician personnel are encouraged to obtain national certification. All support personnel must possess basic educational requirements and be trained to assist the professional personnel as appropriate. All personnel are provided with regular continuing education and training to maintain proficiency and competence. Pharmacists and certified Technicians are required to demonstrate active participation in continuing education courses as required by the State Board of Pharmacy by providing documentation of attendance.
